Too many tears…

I named this sculpture “Too many tears, stretched too far, too many opinions.” Yes, I know it’s a long name but 2020 has been a long year! By September Covid was totally out of control in this country and the nation had been suffering with its effects in so many ways, but I felt this sculpture summed up a lot for me. So many lives lost and tears shed, in fact way too many tears, and we’ve all been stretched past our limits again and again, but what also upset me was the conflict in this country because of too many opposing opinions. Words are powerful and I felt there were many opinions spoken this past summer that were destroying our nation.

In September I attended a few ceramic classes and I started with the notion of taking an older sculpture from PPCC and pushing it further as I felt at the time there was more I could do with this sculptural style. The first photo below was before it was fired, and the glaze test piece is in front. I would like to redo this piece because for starters I would prefer this type of sculpture have a mat finish. Also, when it came out of the first firing someone broke the nose which had to be repaired, but considering many Covid survivors have suffered from a broken sense of smell then maybe this was OK in the end. What I love about creating artwork is the opportunity to take an idea, create something, and then go back and tweak it a bit more and create a new version or use it as a springboard to something new altogether. So next time I have time to attend a ceramic class we’ll see what I come up with then. I’m looking forward to it!

I thought you might like to see my sculpture from PPCC in 2014. The assignment was to take a 2D image and turn it into a 3D sculpture, so I took my Eye of Time drawing where I started with a face and somewhat metamorphosed it into a clock. I chose a circular piece, which I created out of plaster and started with the face and as it turned it morphed into a clock face. I liked the circular concept and would like to investigate this style more in the future.
